1 Year in My Changing Life!

It’s been 365 days, 1 year of working out with my trainer, Brent Davidson.  It really comes down to change, change in lifestyle.  How has the change worked?

Mick Thornton - before the workout

March 2010 Before starting the workouts

Start:

  • 244 pounds
  • 34% body fat
  • High Blood pressure (Dr. talking about meds)
  • Poor resting heart rate – 85 – 95 bpm
  • 41 inch waist wearing 42 inch pants
  • 17.5 inch neck
  • Pot of coffee per day
  • Chronic lower back pain
  • No physical endurance and everything else you can imagine with being obese.

One Year Later:

Mick Thornton 1 year after working out

March 2011 - One year later

  •  197 pounds – 47 pounds!
  • 21% body fat
  • Safe Blood Pressure
  • Resting Heart Rate – 59 bpm
  • 36 inch waist
  • 16 inch neck
  • 2 cups of coffee per week / 90 ounces of water per day!
  • Strengthened lower back
  • Can run a mile in 7:30
  • Run 3-4 miles a couple of times per week.

I eat smart and healthy and I learned to get rid of the processed foods, high fructose corn syrup, and empty carbs. I’ve found my palate has changed due to eating vegetables, clean meats, and healthy snacks.

This has truly been an adventure one step at a time while modifying my lifestyle.  Hear are some more pictures to prove it!

  1. Wow that is fantastic. The pictures are great.

I really need to hit the exercise phase of my change because I weigh a few pounds more than you yet I look a 100 pounds heavier.

Congratulation on a really superb job.

Thanks for the encouragement! Don’t get too worried about the exercise part, when I started, I was walking around the block twice. Then my trainer gave me a goal of something I could work towards. I came up with wanting to snowboard like I did 20 years ago. I’m not quite to the point of just doing the work for the sake of doing the work. I still haven’t found the “Zen Balance”. :)

  2. So So proud for you Mick! This is living proof it can be done with diet and exercise. I’m sure you are very proud of yourself and you should be!

  3. Mick, great to see you doing this. It’s always a good thing when people take up diet and exercise for the right reasons, and do it the healthy way!

What type of diet did you follow? A specific plan, or just more conscientious eating habits?

My trainer really motivated me to change my diet. My number one change was giving up a pot of coffee a day and now drinking about 90 ounces of water per day. The food is not quite a No-Carb diet like “The Zone” although it’s close. He has me just track my daily intake into 5 meals (morning, mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon, dinner). Each meal needs some veggies, some protein, (fat is ok), but empty carbs are out. So no sandwiches, no sodas, no High Fructose Corn Syrup, less preservatives in the food, no added salt.
I was floored the first month at how much food is out there over sized in portion, full of salt and sugar for flavor, injected with preservatives, and in general non-nutricious. I do let some fruits sneak in that are more Carb heavy but my trainer hasn’t given me a hard time on them. He actually gives me a hard time when I ‘eat too little’ of the right stuff. I start loosing energy and not working out as well. My trainer catches me every time I workout and don’t eat right.

I can testify to the difference it has made in Mick and the positive influence it has had on me. I felt that I ate healty and was in prety good shape. Compared to Mick now vs 1 year ago, i have a lot of catching up to do. You inspire me to work harder Mick :)
